IELTS

The world’s most popular English language proficiency test i.e. IELTS is required for higher education and global migration. It is the most popular way to evaluate individual English skills. More than 10,000 organizations globally trust IELTS. It is among one of the essential English language tests that have to be cleared by non-native English speakers. Candidates who appeared for this test assessed in the four different departments.

To judge the levels of proficiency a nine-band scale is used, from non-user (band score 1) through to expert (band score 9). The IELTS is of two types – Academic and General. Let’s discuss both these types one by one:



Academic IELTS

The IELTS Academic is designed for the people who want to study overseas to pursue their higher education or professional training.



Test Format


Listening (30 minutes)
  • Monologues, 4 recorded texts, and conversations.
  • Other than 30 minutes, 10 minutes extra provided to students to transfer answers to the answer sheet.

Reading (60 minutes)

  • The component consists of a total of 40 questions.
  • 3 long reading passages with tasks.
  • Text types: Descriptive and Factual, Discursive and Analytical.
  • Diagrams, Graphs or Illustrations (non-verbal material).
  • Authentic texts from books, journals, and newspapers.

Writing (60 minutes)

  • This component includes 2 tasks
  • A graph, table, chart or diagram are provided to summarise.
  • Write an essay describes a point of view, argument or problem.

Speaking (11 to 14 minutes)

  • Face-to-face interview
  • Contains short questions

General IELTS

People who want to migrate to Australia, Canada, and the UK, or applying for secondary education, training programmes and work experience in English-speaking countries are preparing for this test.


Test Format

  • 3 reading passages with tasks
  • 2 or 3 short factual texts (in section 1).
  • 2 short, work-related, factual texts (in section 2).
  • 1 longer text on a topic of general interest (in section 3).
  • Authentic texts from books, journals, and newspapers.

Writing (60 minutes)

  • Letter writing (at least 150 words)
  • Short essay (at least 250 words)

Speaking (11 to 14 minutes)

  • Face-to-face interview
  • Contains short questions
